Audition Tour: Interview with Stasia Ward Kahoe

I am super excited to have Stasia Ward Kahoe here for an interview on her blog tour!

If you could spend a day with one of your characters, who would you choose and what would you do?

I would choose to spend a day with Lisette because I actually think she’s a nice kid. I’d want to hear her talk about about her dreams and find out how she maintains such steady discipline and dedication to ballet. I’d also like to go a little bit under the surface and see how aware she is of her “best-in-class” status and how much it means to her. It might also be fun to go somewhere cerebral, like a library, to learn more about the non-ballerina Lisette.

If the characters from Audition got stuck on a deserted island, who would fare the best? The worst? And who would be the one to get them off the island?

Ballerinas stranded on a desert island—now that’s the start of an interesting dystopian novel (heehee)! Seriously, though, I think Bonnie would fare the worst because she is so thin she doesn’t have much in the way of reserves for a rough outdoor environment. Rem would manage the best because he is comfortable putting himself first. And Simone would get everyone off the island because she is sharp-eyed, practical and a definite survivor!

Which of your characters would you say is most similar to you?

Although AUDITION is not autobiographical, I grew up a dancer and identify a great deal with Sara. I could easily imagine myself getting swept away by Remington’s charisma, talent and general hotness without seeing with any clarity where the relationship was going. And I do love to read--a quality I shared quite intentionally with my main character.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

That’s easy. I’d go back to Dublin, Ireland. I love the landscape and the storytelling culture. And the Abbey Theatre in Dublin is, in my opinion, one of the world’s best places to see a play.

What was your favorite part about writing Audition?

Writing is hard, so to choose a “favorite” part is rather tricky. I will say that, once I decided to write Audition in verse and not prose, I found the challenge of trying to capture ballet movements in poems exciting.
