Interview with Chelsea Swiggett

Chelsea Swiggett is the author of Rae, a memoir, which is a part of the Louder Than Words series. Rae is out this Monday, August 2nd. She also is a YA book blogger over at The Page Flipper

Was it any different writing your memoir versus writing your other fiction WIPs?
Definitely. While memories might be easier to write in the description department - I can remember exactly how I felt and thought and saw and smelled, so I don't have to worry about authenticity - it's also harder to plot. I came to several points in RAE where I was stuck on what to write next. When I'm writing fiction, I can create a new character or throw in a party or a new job or anything my mind thinks up. You can't do that in a memoir, for obvious reasons. So it's a lot different. I also have to worry about my characters coming across as authentic, because most of them are very different from myself.

What has been your favorite moment memoir-related since you found out your memoir was going to be published?
Getting feedback from professionals; hearing that someone likes my writing is one of the biggest compliments I've ever had. Also, seeing my cover was pretty freaking cool. This whole "author" thing didn't seem real until I saw it.

What is your favorite book to movie?
Pride and Prejudice! Oh, Mr. Darcy, you rascal.

Who doesn't like Pride and Prejudice, especially the BBC version. Now, I know you are a huge Buffy fan. If you had to pick a favorite character off that show, which would it be? Also, do you have a particular season that is your favorite?
AH, so hard. I'd have to say Spike. (HELLO, sarcastic British vampire.) So I'm going to say seasons 4+. But I love every single character - Giles and Willow and Buffy and Xander. They all have such heart. I want to steal them from the show and keep them in my closet or something. Pretend that isn't as creepy as it sounds.

I still have to watch Buffy. I should get on that if it's as awesome as you say. Since becoming a published author, do you find your blogging has changed at all?
Yeah, I've been more sporadic. I have less time to read. I still love reviewing books, though. I feel like I might read more critically in regards to writing.

Where's your favorite place to get coffee?
Seattle's Best Coffee. I can bookshop in Borders for hours while sipping a raspberry mocha kiss or orange bliss latte. It's heaven.

What's the best book you've read lately?
Probably Deception by Lee Nichols. It's a type of ghost story, and it reminded me of The Mediator series by Meg Cabot (which I adored.)

This book was so cute. It's very light and fluffy and keeps you entertained. It is a bit predictable, but not SO predictable that by the end of chapter one you know how everything will turn out. I love the set up of the book - all throughout the book there is status updates embedded in the writing!

What's Your St@tus is just a totally fun book. It's is filled with so many funny moments and there's a whole plan complete with a James Bond-esque group to save prom! For poor Madison, nothing can seem to go right.

I loved all the characters. They're a ton of fun and all have something really snazzy about them. Like Lisa uses French all the time. I love the couples in the book. Madison and Nate are my favorite - they are so cute together!

I would definately suggest this book, and the first book in the series which is just as good. What's Your St@tus is filled with fun and with characters you just can't help but to love. This is definately a book for those who love chick-lit, proms, and romance.

This one sounds absolutely amazing. I love angel books, and this one sounds simply brilliant. I absolutely love the cover. I think it's one of my favorite covers ever, it's just simply gorgeous. This is going to be one of those books I will rush out the day it's out and buy! Every time I look at the cover I get excited and I am counting down the days until this one is out :)

This is an absolutely adorable summer read. In alternating point of views, you hear a great story with awesome writing - all wrapped up in a gorgeous cover. This is one you don't want to miss!

I absolutely loved how the story was told in alternating point of views. I love hearing both characters thoughts! It was easy to get caught up in the story right away. The secondary characters, like Hank's player brother Chase, keep the story moving. I loved romance of the story. Hank and Liana are such an unlikely couple, and you see them bond over music, science, and life.

Liana bugged me a bit. She was very driven on this note and thinking she was a slut. I felt like SO much of her story was just on that, and I would've liked to see a bit more of Liana beyond her focus. Liana seemed like a character who had so much story to tell, but we only got a little sliver of it. On the other hand, I absolutely adored Hank. He was such a cutie and just had so much charm. When he did something wrong, you still had to love him for it. He also just says things as they are, which is something you really have to admire him for. I loved the other characters in the book. I thought Hank's mom was really cool!

This is a great book for those looking for a sweet read. The Half-life of Planets has a wide range of characters, all bringing something great to the story. This is an entertaining read that can really bring you to understand others who may be a bit different from you.

Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

I think I'm about the last person on the planet earth to read this book, and also about the first person not to absolutely adore these books. I had been told to read them for ages, particularly from Gail. The last 100 pages or so is really what redeemed it for me.

My big issue with this book was the writing. It seriously almost made me put it down, but every time I was about to do that, the book would redeem itself slightly. The first third to half of the book was awfully slow. It was slow reading, but at the same time intriguing. I didn't really understand all of what was going on, so I wanted to know everything.

I loved the characters. Most of them all had such depth and were wonderful. Rue was absolutely my favorite character of the book. I adored her. Peeta was a character I liked right off the bat. Katniss was an interesting character, but I found her a bit annoying. I just didn't like her thoughts. I found her flat and I didn't like her at all.

Another thing about The Hunger Games I really did like was the world. I thought it was simply fascinating and I loved how Collins set it up.

This was overall a good read, but it just didn't live up to what I thought it would be. I have heard nothing but glowing things for it, and while I loved all the character (minus Katniss some of the time) and thouht the plot was original and intriguing, the plot was slower and I really wasn't a fan of the writing. The ending though, was ace, and has me extremely excited for Catching Fire.

I love this book! It's not often I love a book 2 in a series as much as I love book 1, but Julie Kagawa manages to do just that with The Iron Daughter! The Iron Daughter continues to hold this magical feel to it as you read. It is filled with everything you need: sexy men, action, an intriguing plot, and iron fae who might kill you. Like I said perfect! I read this book in one sitting, glued to the pages. The books really have an addictive quality that makes you crave more!

I just love the world Kagawa has created with The Iron Fae. It just captivates you right away, and pulls you right in beside the characters. Which brings us to the plot, which I continue to be awed by. I just love the idea behind it. I mean, fae plus throw in a twist with all the technology we have in the world? What is NOT to love?!?

My single complaint about the book has to deal with Meghan, the main character. I kept waiting for her to pick up a sword and fight, but instead she lets others do the fighting. Meghan, to me, always comes across as fairy smart, so to me it would just be second nature for her to join in the fight, instead of standing by.

Kagawa really plays with your emotions with The Iron Daughter. Parts of the book you've never been happier, others you want to cry, others you're just angry, you get the idea. The characters are absolutely wonderful. The Iron Daughter introduces you to a variety of new characters, and I've come to love them all alongside all the old characters. Ash is my absolutely favorite character of the book, and I am still 100% on Team Ash!

The ending is really what did it for me. I was loving the book, but when I got towards the end it threw me over the deep end! It was just perfect. If you weren’t already flipping the pages at some insane speed already, the last chunk will send you reading at some crazy speed!

I am now pining away for the final installment in the series, The Iron Queen. I will be going through withdrawal until then. I wholeheartedly suggest you go buy The Iron Daughter, as it is absolutely amazing and will blow you away! Three little words basically sum up my feelings for The Iron Daughter: It is amazing!

He vows to obliterate the town and all its inhabitants-the living and the undead. Claire Danvers and her friends are the only ones who stand in his way. But even if they defeat Bishop, will the vampires ever be content to go back to the old rules, after having such a taste of power?

This is definately my favorite book of the series so far! Carpe Corpus definately is a big one that makes you guess at what is happen, and be on the edge of your chair. All the characters change and grow a lot in Carpe Corpus. One thing I was extremely happy about was that Carpe Corpus's ending isn't a cliffhanger like the prior books. That isn't to say I'm not totally anxious to read book 7, Fade Out. I am just in love with this series. I'm really not sure what it is about them, they're just addicting.

Even though Dale is totally not her type… and might have a crush on her. Ugh. But it's a nice thing to do, and Casey's always been the "nice" girl.

But now, that night conflicts with the biggest event of the semester, the All-Greek formal. Casey already has a date lined up: hot transfer student Rob Howell. He's her plan to get over her sexy-slacker ex, Cappie. And even nice girls get to be bad sometimes, right?

What to do? With a little help from BFF Ashleigh, unwanted advice from frenemy Rebecca Logan and even a push from Cappie, what Casey does may surprise even herself….

When I heard about Greek: Double Date, I was intrigued. I had only watched several episodes on TV at random times, what I had watched was good. Greek: Double Date was just as good, if not better, than the few episodes I have seen. I am definately now intrigued to watch the TV show.

Greek: Double Date is a fast read. Once you are reading, the pages just fly by, and all at once you're several chapters later. There were a few parts that seemed to drag a bit. The characters are a lot of fun, and you get caught up in their lives right away. The characters were my favorite part of the book.

I would definately recommend this one, especially if you're looking for a fun, lighter read. The ending really left me wanting Greek: Best Frenemies which hits stores in August!

You keep doubting different characters, not sure which ones to trust. Then you are constantly trying to figure out what will happen. This was a really great read. These books are awesome, quick reads you are sure to love!

This has been my favorite book in the series yet! Feast of Fools has one heck of a plot! The plot is one to keep you flipping pages. Another great thing about Feast of Fools is how much more developed all the characters get. All the old characters are back, and a few new ones. Romance also takes a step up in Feast of Fools. One thing that has driven me insane with the previous three books, and this one as well, is how everyone is always talking about how Claire is so young and Claire's so young she can't do this. It just gets really old, especially when the characters telling her so were only a little over a year to two years older than her. This series is definately becoming a favorite!

These books are so much fun to read! I am 100% addicted to these books. I finish one, and want to pick up the next instantly! I love the characters. I don't think I could pick a favorite, but it comes down to Michael and Shane. I love both, and like each one better at different times. Rachel Caine really likes to watch her characters suffer, they all go through so much! I am so glad I have Feast of Fools sititng right next to me, as the ending is a killer!

So one night, Bet comes up with a plan. She'll go to school as Will. Will can join the military. And though it seems impossible, they actually manage to pull it off.
But once Bet gets to the school, she begins to realize the education she's going to get isn't exactly the one she was expecting.

I absolutely loved this book! I loved everything about it: the characters, the story, the writing, the list goes on and on. This book was so cute and I loved Bet's voice.

I loved reading about all of Bet's adventures at schools while she was pretending to be a boy. This was so much fun to read. I also kept waiting for her to get caught. Bet falls for her roommate, who thinks she is a boy, and that is absolutely priceless watching them. I absolutely loved her roommate, James. He was definately swoonworthy. At first, you don't really know what to think of him, but as the book goes on he really grows as a character and you see him and "Will" really start to become good friends. Mrs. Smithers was another character I really liked. At first, I figured she'd be a stern lady with not much character to her, but I was very wrong. She was one of my favorite characters of the book!

I do wish we had gotten to hear a bit more of the story. The Education of Bet was only 192 pages, so there was no length issue of going longer. Don't delay, go get this book and read it as soon as you can!

I have been a Jennifer Echols fan since the day I picked up Major Crush off the "New YA" shelf at my library. I have loved every single book by her thus far, and Forget You was no exception. Since the day I read the description, I had been dying to read it. I had high expectations for Forget You, and it surpassed them all by leaps and bounds.

Jennifer Echols has filled the pages of Forget You with a beautiful story dealing with darker and raw experiences of life. She wasted not one word, and hooked me into the story with the first words. Zoey is dealing with her family basically being torn apart and is going through a lot. Doug is there for her, and despite her resentment of him at first, you see them meld together The chemistry between Doug and Zoey was intense and simply flew off the page.

Jennifer Echols really has a way with words. Forget You is filled with some of the most romantic, beautiful scenes I've ever read. Every moment felt so real. There were so many scenes that simply took my breath away. The sexual tension was so much I'm surprised the book didn't burst into flames. Everything was perfect, nothing ever felt from for Doug and Zoey. There was not one thing I could even come close to criticizing about Forget You. If I did say something, it would be that I wish it was longer because I never wanted to leave Zoey and Doug's world.

Jennifer Echols has an insane talent with writing these absolutely amazing boys that you fall for on about page 2. This is one of those books. I was crushing on Doug right away. He was sweet despite the attitude he gave off. He was totally hot, and you kept thinking about his amazing eyes. Along with her talent of writing gorgeous men, Jennifer Echols writes amazing heroines with strong qualities. Zoey was a strong willed girl and I really appreciated that.

If I had to describe Forget You with one word it would be W.O.W. Jennifer Echols has written a book that will be sure to blow readers away. It's superbly well written and is filled with a story that will make your heart melt. It has an addictive quality, that makes it hard to put down once you've started reading. Forget You is a rare gem of a book in every way.

I do on the other hand, love the politics and the entire layout of the town. I think it's really interesting. I continue to love the characters. They're all so different from one another. Definately can't wait to read book 3!

I am completely addicted now, and I am very happy I have the rest of the books in the series here, waiting to be read. The writing isn't that fantastic, but the plot is intruiging, which captivates readers. Glass Houses is a real page turner! Now, off to start book 2!

A totally random side note - but does it drive anyone else insane that Glass Houses doesn't match the rest of the books in the series? All the rest have black spines and Glass Houses has a blue spine, so it just doesn't look right on the shelf.

Wow. Lauren Barnholdt has done it again! I have read one of Lauren Barnholdt's other books, Two Way Street, more times than one probably should - I can't help it, I just love it. And I feel that One Night That Changes Everything is going to be another of those books, that I love so much and can just reread it over and over.

I made the mistake of starting One Night That Changes Everything 45 minutes before I had to leave for work. The rest of the night I couldn't concentrate because I just wanted to read more! When I got home I finished reading straight through - the writing was absolutely fantastic and I was instantly drawn in. Needless to say, I couldn't put it down!

I found myself falling for Cooper right away, he was very swoonworthy. The entire book I was rooting for him. Eliza bugged me a bit at times. She was a great character, but her attitude irked me a bit at certain points. I loved her two best friends, Marissa and Clarice. They were so much fun!

I loved the story. It was mind games and facing your fears. As mean as it was for Eliza, it was so much fun to read about her facing her fears and see how everyone around her reacted. It left lots of room for drama, and drama is what readers get. Lauren Barnholdt really likes to make her characters suffer with all the different things she throws in.

This really is a book you will not want to miss. For Lauren Barnholdt fans, this is another stellar read. For those who haven't read her books before, definately give it a try! I can't wait to see what Lauren Barnholdt comes up with next.

13 To Life was a phenomenal debut! I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when I started reading, but what I found I absolutely loved!

I loved the characters. They were very real. Jess was a really fun character. I loved all the qualities she had - like being great with horses, having a great sense of humor, and just being a nice person. I felt she really grew as a character throughout the book. Though, I did have a bit of an issue with how obstinate and just plain dumb she acted in the Sarah situation. Pietr was awfully lovely. I loved how he always slipped in the little Russian phrases like Nyet. I loved the whole Rusakova family. Pietr's sister, Catherine, was my favorite character of the whole book. She played a smaller part, but every time she walked on the page, I just loved it.

I loved the whole mystery surrounding Pietr and his family. The entire book you were trying to figure out it, making guesses here and there about exactly what everything meant. The plot was one to keep you interested. 13 To Life is a real page turner! I liked how it wasn't your average w erewolf novel. I loved the romance in 13 To Life. I loved how Jess didn't instantly fall to mush and go right for Pietr, for which I give Delany many props for.

I'm really interested to see where the story will go with book 2, as the end leaves readers with a lot of questions and dire need for book 2! The end is where the plot really picks up. I simply cannot wait for it to come out. I can't wait to see what other works Shannon Delany comes out with!

What'd you guys get this week?

In which I profess my love for Anna and the French Kiss...

I had gotten Anna and the French Kiss about a month ago in a box from Penguin, and I've been itching to read it since. I kept resisting and finally, my resistance was broken by the lovely Sara. So despite my pile of books we needed to read first that is threatening to topple over on us, both of us started reading it Thursday. And both of us have already finished - by Friday night. I absolutely loved it, and I now feel the need to share my love for it with all of you. I am simply bubbling with my love for it. I keep having this urge to reread it. This book is just perfect. I don't think I have loved a book this much since Sea or before that Going Too Far. There was not a single thing I didn't like about it, and I can't wait until it is out so I can go out and buy a copy. The wait for her next book is going to be painfully long and I really hope she writes many many more lovely books. I would highly suggest preordering this one! It is THAT good.

My top 8 reasons to read Anna and the French Kiss:

1. Etienne St Clair. He has stolen my heart, and will not let go. He is just awesome and I adore him. Did I meant he has an accent?

2. All the characters have issues of their own. I hate when characters have just perfect lives and nothing goes wrong. All the characters have their problems and it just makes them all that much more lovely.

3. The contents of this lovely book match the oustanding cover! I have loved the cover since the day I saw it, and what's inside is even BETTER.

4. The main character has the most epic name ever Anna Oliphant. Which gives her the awesome nickname Banana Elephant.

5. It is hilarious. There are so many funny parts! I was laughing so hard at parts.

6. It is set in PARIS. Need I say more?

7. The romance isn't easy and there's so much tension. I LOVED it. Another thing that was awesome, it wasn't just the main character having romance issues. ALL the characters were having their love issues, which I thought was awesome and kind of unique. It wasn't solely focused on the main characters relationship.

8. I can't stop talking about it.

I'm not the only one who's loved it! So many people have been crazy about it, including Sara (The Hiding Spot), Daisy Whitney (The Mockingbirds), and Suzanne Young (The Naughty List)! This is one you will not want to miss.

When a pack of werewolves chooses the national forest behind Gwen’s home as their new territory, the tensions in Klikamuks escalate-into murder. It soon becomes clear a serial killer is methodically slaying Others. The police turn a blind eye, leaving Gwen to find the killer before the killer finds her. As she hunts for clues, she uncovers more Others living nearby than she ever expected. Like Tavian, a sexy Japanese fox-spirit who rivals Zack and challenges her to embrace her Otherness. Gwen must struggle with her own conflicted identity, learn who she can trust, and-most importantly-stay alive.

Other is a refreshing read that isn't quite like anything else you've ever read. It's really an awesome debut.

I loved how unique Other's plot was. It wasn't really along the beaten path of all the paranormal out there, which was very cool. Karen Kincy does a great job of leading you to think you know exactly what is going on. The entire book, I'm like "Oh it's THIS person. I'm right, I've got to be." Then I got to the end, and, guess what, I was wrong and totally shocked.

The diversity of all the creatures in Other was creature, and especially how Karen Kincy used all sorts of creatures you don't hear much about. Yes, there were your common creatures such as werewolves, but also kitsunes, pookas and dryads. I loved it!

The writing was fantastic. It really made you feel as if you were right next to Gwen. Gwen goes through a lot, and Kincy portrays this very well and really makes you feel for Gwen. There's a perfect balance between describing everything and dialogue. The world she creates is just awesome. In Gwen's world, "Others" are known everywhere and live among humans - in one scene, she sees a centaur shopping and it's totally normal. I thought that was so interesting and really gave a lot of points to consider to the story.

There were a few parts where Gwen's interactions with either Zack or Tavian felt very awkward to me. It made me not quite sure what to think. Those few parts aside, I did love all the Gwen and Tavian scenes. They felt so free and real.

This is one I would whole heartedly suggest. It is a fantastic debut set in a rich world and filled with a full scale of creatures and wonderful characters! Karen Kincy is definately an author to watch, I can't wait for more from her!

Everlasting was a book I really had a hard time getting in to. I had picked it up, read a few pages and it just wasn't keeping my interest. So I set it down for a bit, read a few more page on and off. Then all at once, everything clicked about 50 or 60 pages in and I couldn't put it down.

The plot was very intriguing, especially with the time period it was set in. That was one of the things that made me so excited about Everlasting. A good portion of the book took place on various ships, and I thought that was so interesting. You don't read about life of ships very much. I also loved the the whole mysterious aspect of the adventure. It made Everlasting that much greater of a read.

I absolutely loved the characters. I loved Camille. She was spunky and fun. I loved Oscar right off the bat. Angie Frazier has a way with words, and even the minor characters stood out to you, with none of them fading into the wallpaper. Right away, I was intrigued by the romance, waiting to see how it would spin out.

I would definately read this one. It's got a gorgeous cover (which for some reason reminds me of The Little Mermaid...), wonderful characters and an awesome plot! It's action packed and will be one you'll be sorry to miss.
